Stretch With Caution: While we diligently watch our diets, drink filtered water, and breathe purified air, it turns out there's another sneaky source of plastic exposureā€”our workout clothes. Yes, that trusty sports bra and those go-to leggings could be silently impacting our health. Recent studies highlight how synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon, which make our activewear so stretchy and comfortable, may actually be leaching toxic chemicals into our skin during workouts.

These fabrics, products of petrochemicals, are often treated with chemicals such as phthalates and bisphenols to enhance their properties. Alarmingly, when we sweatā€”something quite inevitable during a good workoutā€”this moisture can draw out chemical additives from the fabric, making them available for absorption through our skin. Substances like brominated flame retardants, used widely in consumer products for their fire-retardant properties, can seep out due to the oil-soluble nature of sweat, potentially leading to thyroid issues, hormonal disruptions, and even neurological problems.

Why should we be extra cautious? As women over 50, we're already managing myriad changes and adding toxic chemical exposure to the mix could complicate our health further. The concern is not trivial, as these chemicals are known to bioaccumulate, building up in our bodies over time, potentially contributing to increased risks of chronic diseases such as cancer, particularly breast and endocrine-related types which are on the rise. Research also indicates that microplastics in synthetic fabrics can also attach to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, amplifying the potential health risks.

So, what can we do to mitigate these risks? Consider the fabric of your fitness wear. Opt for clothing made from natural fibers like organic cotton, hemp, or merino wool. These materials are safer and sustainable alternatives that do not contain harmful chemicals typically found in synthetic fibers. Check for certifications from standards like the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) or OEKO-TEX, which ensure that textiles meet stringent safety and environmental criteria. Remove your workout clothes immediately after exercising. Wash your clothes at lower temperatures to reduce microfiber shedding and install washing machine filters to capture microfibers. Air-drying clothes instead of tumble drying can also reduce microfiber release.

Getting informed about where and how your clothes are made can make a difference. Brands that are transparent about their manufacturing processes are more likely to employ safer practices. While completely overhauling your wardrobe might not be feasible, gradually replacing key pieces with safer alternatives can significantly reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals. As we challenge the aging narrative and strive for healthier lifestyles, let's not overlook the clothes we wear, especially during exercise. Being mindful of what touches our skin is just as important as what we put into our bodies. By choosing safer, more natural options, we protect our health and contribute to a healthier planet. ā€‹ā€‹šŸ’° Wealth Wisdom: Securing Your Financial Future

Wedding Bells And Dollar Bills: Ah, the sweet sound of wedding bells! Your little girl is all grown up and ready to say "I do." While you're brimming with pride, there's also that tiny voice in your head reminding you of two things: your bank account and your sanity. Weddings can be a financial black hole, and while we allocate funds for our future and retirement, we often overlook the massive expense of wedding planning. Traditionally, the bride's family is expected to foot the bill. And while many of us may have always wanted a daughter, I know I didā€”perhaps our mothers' caution to "be careful what you wish for" is starting to make sense. With wedding costs ranging from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, it's a significant financial commitment that can siphon off funds from other essential areas of our lives. Having recently gone through this myself, I thought I would share some of what I learned.

First and foremost, have the dreaded budget conversation early on. It's like ripping off a Band-Aid ā€“ painful but necessary. Sit down with your daughter and lay out a realistic budget. Remember, this isnā€™t about limiting their dreams; itā€™s about managing expectations. Start with something like, ā€œWe want to help make your day special, but letā€™s make sure weā€™re all on the same page about costs.ā€ Then brace yourself for the wide-eyed look of shock. Stay strong; your resilience will be worth it in the end.

When considering venues, think outside the box. Public parks, community centers, or even a relativeā€™s picturesque backyard can provide a beautiful setting at a fraction of the cost. Catering can be one of the biggest expenses, but there are ways to cut costs without compromising quality. Consider a buffet or family-style meal instead of a formal sit-down dinner. Food trucks are also a fun, trendy option. And then, of course, thereā€™s the dress. Encourage your daughter to keep an open mind when finding her dream dress. Sample sales, consignment shops, and even online marketplaces can yield stunning results without the designer price tag. Speaking of dresses, be prepared for the possibility of two dresses. This trend can significantly impact your budget. And amid the chaos of planning, donā€™t forget to take care of yourself. Schedule some downtime, whether itā€™s a spa day, a long walk, or a glass of wine with friends.

Reflecting on my own daughter's wedding, I can tell you this: we survived. Our bank account? Not so much. But the laughter, tears, and unforgettable moments made every penny worth it. Iā€™m sharing these ideas with youā€”most of which I did not heedā€”hoping they will guide you away from making similar mistakes. If you're trying to keep costs down, avoid destination weddings that add travel and accommodation expenses for both you and your guests. Choose a venue that comes with all the fixings, like a restaurant, hotel, or catering hall, to avoid extra rental costs. We chose a gorgeous barn in Maine ā€“ beautiful, but everything had to be rented, and it was far. If youā€™re considering a party planner, remember theyā€™re costly and not all created equal. They can be extremely helpful, but make sure youā€™re comfortable working with them. If a planner is not feasible, ask a friend or close family member to help. A neutral third party may prove indispensable. In order to budget correctly, start with the most expensive things first. We underestimated the cost of flowers, which my daughter and I love, and it was a significant expense. If youā€™re planning an outdoor wedding, research the weather history for that time of year. We picked Maine in late October, planned half the event outdoors, and never really considered the realities of the climate. The wedding gods must have been watching as we lucked out with record-breaking 75-degree weather. Of course, while the weather was on our side, circumstance was not; a random shooter on the loose meant extensive security and a change in plans, which was a loss economically and emotionally. In hindsight, winter clothing would definitely have been cheaper and less stressful. The lesson? Always have a contingency budget for unforeseen events.

Remember, in the end, it's not about the perfect wedding; it's about creating a celebration that reflects your daughter's love story without losing sight of what truly matters. And if you can keep your relationship and bank account intact, well, that's just icing on the (wedding) cake. Cheers to love, laughter, and a wedding to remember! Wedding planning is a balancing act between dreams and reality, but with a little creativity, a lot of love, and a sense of humor, you can pull off a day thatā€™s memorable for all the right reasons.

Oh, and one extra thoughtā€¦keep in mind the ten most expensive days to have a wedding.

šŸ§  Lifelong Learning And Brain Boosts

Brain Boosters for the Forgetful: "Where are my glasses? What did I come into this room for?" Questions like these seem to play a starring role in our lives these days. As we navigate the fabulous fifties and beyond, these little lapses can feel like previews of a future we're not eager to embrace. Amidst these moments of forgetfulness and the countless stories of Aunt Mildredā€™s mislaid purse, many of us find ourselves searching for ways to keep our mental edges sharp. Every forgotten name or misplaced key can feel like a tick in a box we'd rather leave unchecked, particularly when we hear about the growing prevalence of Alzheimer's and dementia. These conditions remind us of the critical importance of maintaining brain health as we age. To support cognitive function and address these concerns, many are turning to brain supplements.

Our brains function like high-performance vehicles needing top-quality fuel for optimal performance. Ideally, a well-balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fatty fish would provide all the nutrients we need. However, as we age, our bodies may not absorb nutrients as efficiently, and our dietary intake might not meet our nutritional needs due to various factors, including appetite changes. This is where strategic supplementation with key nutrients can help, not as miracle cures, but as vital tools in our cognitive maintenance kit. Omega-3 fatty acids, for instance, are crucial for reducing inflammation and maintaining communication between brain cells. Vitamin D, the 'sunshine vitamin,' supports overall brain health, particularly as natural production decreases with age. The B vitaminsā€”B6, B9 (folate), and B12ā€”are essential for controlling homocysteine levels, an amino acid linked with increased risks of Alzheimerā€™s. Recent studies have shown that consistent use of multivitamins can lead to modest cognitive improvement in older adults. Studies have also linked improvement in brain health to fiber supplements. Additionally, plasmalogens, exogenous ketones, spermidine, Urolithin A, and MitoQ (CoQ10) have been recognized by experts in longevity and regenerative medicine for their potential brain health benefits. Learn more about them here. For more pros and cons on brain supplements and specific choices, read this.

However, not all supplements, medications, and health conditions play well together. For example, omega-3 supplements might thin the blood, which can be problematic if weā€™re also taking blood-thinning medications like warfarin. Excessive Vitamin D can lead to calcium build-up, causing heart and kidney issues. Supplements must be chosen with care, emphasizing quality and compatibility with our health profiles.

This brings us to a critical point: not all supplements are created equal. The market is flooded with products that promise much but deliver little due to poor manufacturing practices or misleading labels. When selecting supplements, look for products that are certified by reputable third-party organizations such as USP (United States Pharmacopeia) or NSF International. These certifications help ensure the product meets high standards for quality and safety. Additionally, consulting with healthcare providers before starting any new supplement regimen can help us tailor a strategy that complements our individual health profiles and needs.

It is also noteworthy that not everyone believes these brain supplements work. Some experts argue that there is not enough proof or adequate regulation, suggesting true brain health is best improved by a plant-based diet, regular exercise, enough sleep, stress management, nurturing social connections, and mental stimulation. While these supplements may have potential, incontrovertible research is still needed to confirm their efficacy.

Armed with the right knowledge and quality supplements, those moments of "what did I come into this room for?" can become less frequent. Letā€™s approach these years with our brains as sharp as our wit, navigating this chapter with the savvy to match our experience, ready to make the most of every moment. By combining a healthy lifestyle with well-chosen supplements, we can work toward maintaining our cognitive health and enjoying the vibrant life we deserve.

Embracing the Glow Down Movement: In the world of beauty and self-improvement, a refreshing trend is capturing the attention of women over 50. Known as the ā€œglow down,ā€ this movement champions authenticity and self-acceptance over relentless enhancement and cosmetic procedures. This shift is not just about embracing natural beauty but also about focusing on enriching lifeā€™s other aspects such as experiences and relationships that offer deeper emotional and health rewards. Younger women are leading the way by stepping back from the high-maintenance beauty standards that have long dictated their self-worth. Observing this, women over 50 can find a powerful message: beauty does not diminish with age; it evolves.

The 'glow down' movement reflects a broader societal shift toward valuing mental health and well-being over conforming to restrictive beauty norms. This trend is partly a survival strategy against the mental and emotional toll of unrealistic beauty standardsā€”a poignant lesson for all ages. It underscores the significance of prioritizing mental and emotional health, which can inspire women over 50 to simplify their beauty routines in favor of practices that truly make them feel vibrant and alive. Studies show that close relationships and social connections greatly enhance emotional well-being and longevity, surpassing any beauty regimen in benefits. Embracing the glow down can involve strategies such as refreshing your self-care routine, hydrating well, getting enough sleep, managing life stresses, and focusing on self-acceptance and confidence.

This trend among younger women can be seen as a proactive measure influenced by witnessing the challenges and regrets experienced by older generations. They're choosing to step away from rigorous beauty regimens earlier, setting a new precedent for how beauty and aging are perceived. For older women, this is an invitation to redefine relationships with beauty, encouraging the acceptance of oneā€™s natural self that fosters confidence and visibility at any age. Consistency in adhering to health and beauty routines that work best is key. Eliminating toxic habits and influences, whether bad habits or negative company, and staying true to yourself can help maintain a genuine glow.

Sharing less-than-perfect moments on social media and in real life can create a no-judgment zone and help combat negative self-image, reminding us that everyone has those ā€˜mehā€™ moments. By focusing on mental health, authenticity, and self-acceptance, women of all ages can find empowerment in their natural beauty. This movement encourages a shift from the relentless pursuit of perfection to a more relaxed and genuine approach to beauty and self-care. It's about embracing the changes that come with age and finding beauty in every stage of life.

As we continue to navigate and redefine the aging process, the 'glow down' offers an empowering blueprint for embracing our genuine selves. Itā€™s a celebration of the beauty that comes with lifeā€™s experiences and a reminder that our value extends far beyond our physical appearance. Letā€™s take inspiration from this movement to foster a culture in 'Ageless Ascent'. Here, aging is not only accepted but celebrated, showing the world that the later years can be filled with grace, confidence, and authentic beauty. Remember, you are always enough.
